“We were all meant to be naturalists, each in his degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things.”

During a nature trail walk in February 2025, I had a serendipitous encounter that would deepen our understanding of monarch butterfly conservation. A gracious woman approached our nature study group to share information about California Western Monarch Day—a celebration we had never heard of before.

That chance meeting led to a meaningful connection. Through several generous conversations, she shared stories, historical documents, and insights about this special day of recognition. Her name is Priscilla Cruz, and together with her husband Joe, she played an instrumental role in establishing Senate Resolution No. 66, which officially commemorates California Western Monarch Day every February 5th.

Meeting Priscilla was truly a blessing for our group, opening our eyes to both the beauty of the western monarch butterfly and the power of dedicated individuals to create lasting change.
